PGI and PDO accreditations were first developed in 1992 by the European Union. These accreditations give legal protection for named regional food products against imitation across the EU.
Fratelli Beretta own the biggest range of Italian charcuterie PDO/PGI products.
PGI – Protected Geographical Indication
Protects regional foods that have a specific quality, reputation or other characteristics attributable to that area. PGI stops other manufacturers outside of a region copying a regional product.
PDO – Protected Designation of Origin
Products are produced, processed and prepared in a specific area. They use a particular and usually traditional production method and recipe. The whole process is strictly under control.
